JUST TRYAN IT

Ryan Darby’s world was turned upside down on December 23, 2009 when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). One would expect that his family would do what many people facing the same terrifying prospect are forced to do every day – withdraw and hunker down in preparation for the next three and half years of grueling treatment.

But instead of isolation, they engaged, reached out, and offered help to those around them.

“When Ryan was diagnosed, we thought we should raise money to give back to Georgetown to help the families that really needed it,” Ryan’s mom Mollie Darby says.

“When I got cancer, people think it affected my life big time. It did. For the better.”

The resulting project would grow into a truly special organization, one that has gifted over $1,529,400 to families fighting childhood cancer.

JUST TRYAN IT hosts triathlons where kids aged 6-14 train, race, and raise money to help other kids going through cancer. The triathlons, located in Chapel Hill, NC, Bethesda, MD, and Alexandria, VA, are a great way for healthy kids to gain empathy and practice service, while making a real and tangible difference in the lives of hundreds of families.

“I think it’s changed the way children are treated,” Chair of Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital Dr. Aziza Shad says. “It gives them hope, and all that is made possible by JUST TRYAN IT.”

“JUST TRYAN IT helps families focus on their sick child.”

Pediatric cancer can have an enormous financial strain as well as an emotional one. Parents often have to take large swaths of time off work to care for their child, and costs such as travel, lodging, special food or equipment, and childcare can quickly become overwhelming.

“JUST TRYAN IT helps families focus on their sick child,” JTI president Carrie Norry says. “We pay for gas, we pay for mortgages, we pay for hotel rooms and babysitters. We pay for prescription drugs that aren’t covered by insurance. We are just trying to do our small part in helping families ease some of the financial burdens they have going through cancer.”

The incredible story that is JUST TRYAN IT can perhaps best be summed up in the words of the inspiration for the whole organization, Ryan himself:

“When I got cancer, people think it affected my life big time. It did. For the better.”

And as JUST TRYAN IT gets to be a larger and larger organization, a lot of other kids and families are being affected big time, for the better, as well.

Profits are split evenly between JUST TRYAN IT and resilience gives. JUST TRYAN IT is committing proceeds towards its mission of helping families in need while resilience gives reinvests proceeds to work with more patients.

Made in North Carolina from a blend of cotton and polyester, the JUST TRYAN IT sock has moisture wicking technology to keep your feet dry and cool during activity.

Why are there some products IN PRODUCTION OR FUNDRAISING?

Because we are making custom socks on-demand for each patient and their network, we use a fundraising period to determine how many socks to produce before investing in inventory. This allows us to keep this a free service for patients.
